McCotter Says He Opposes Ports Deal,
But Doesn’t Care to Know How It Happened
McCotter on Thursday Voted Against
Finding Out How the Secretive Deal Happened
Dearborn Heights, MI — Rep. Thad McCotter on Thursday voted against investigating a critical ports deal that affects our national security even though he publicly stated that he opposes the ports deal because foreigners are involved. In what is just the latest proof of Thaddeus
McCotter’s out-of-touch leadership, he blocked legislation that would require a vote on a 45-day investigation of the sale of American port operations from a British company to a company from the United Arab Emirates.
“Thad McCotter does not appear to know what he is doing in Washington anymore,” said Tony Trupiano. “First he says he opposes the ports deal, but now he says he doesn’t care to find out how the deal happened in the first place. I guess ignorance is bliss after all.”
At the beginning of the week, many voters in Wayne and Oakland Counties received pre-recorded phone messages from McCotter stating his opposition to the ports deal. The political campaign calls were apparently paid for with taxpayer money.
By the end of the week, McCotter had voted against any discussion of why the deal happened in the first
place. House Resolution 702, March 2, 2006 [http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2006/roll018.xml].
Trupiano continued, “There are a lot of unanswered questions and clearly a lot of reasons that the Washington Republicans want to continue hiding the way they do business. McCotter needs to stop defending this in-the-dark policymaking and remember who sent he is supposed to be representing in Washington.”
