Thad McCotter’s Vote to Increase America’s Debt: Priceless
Dearborn Heights, MI — Today the
U.S. Congress cast a shameful vote to raise the country’s debt ceiling for the fourth time in five years, pushing the country further into debt and putting a final nail in the coffin on the term “fiscal responsibility.”
Democratic Congressional Candidate Tony Trupiano said that Rep. Thad McCotter’s support of increasing America’s debt (deficit) yet again is another example of McCotter’s misplaced priorities and why it is time for new leadership in Congress and for the people of Michigan’s 11th District.
“The average American and the average Michigander knows that when the bank account is empty and the credit card is maxed out, you don’t have the luxury of continuing to write checks and asking for more credit,” Trupiano said. “The fact that Thad McCotter and the so-called leadership in Congress continues to rubber-stamp this President’s reckless fiscal policies is a disgrace, especially when each American’s share of the
national debt is already more than $28,000.”
Under George Bush and the Republican leadership in Congress, America’s debt ceiling—or credit limit—has increased a whopping 46% ($3 trillion) thanks to votes cast by Members of Congress like Thad McCotter who continue to give the President a blank check for a bank account that is already sorely overdrawn.
The federal budget is a concrete embodiment of policy choices, a moral document that reflects the values and priorities of our nation similar to a family budget. The Republican budget prioritizes tax cuts for the rich and wasteful spending in the defense budget, while shortchanging veterans’ benefits, education, health care, energy research, homeland security, housing for the elderly and disabled, and child care for working families.
Simply put, these poor budget choices and their impact on the federal deficit ultimately hit taxpayers’ wallets. Yet, the special interests still get their pork projects, Michiganders get stiffed with the bill, and Rep McCotter stands by and does nothing.
